Joey fell in love with sports at a very young age. Being the youngest of 4 kids, he experienced a variety of sports while watching his siblings compete in gymnastics, wrestling, basketball, baseball, football, volleyball and soccer. Joey played baseball and basketball to the JV level and played volleyball throughout high school in Northern California. He was Varsity his junior and senior years and Team Captain as a senior. Being from a small town, Joey took advantage of broadcasting opportunities that were offered to him in high school: live streaming football, boys/girls basketball, and volleyball. That is when he realized he was born to commentate and call sports. Growing up while watching sports helped Joey develop a knack for saying what the announcers would say 5 seconds before they said it.
Joey pursued opportunities in Portland, OR while going to school full-time at Arizona State University (online) pursuing a degree at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communications and working part-time at Starbucks. He called two-seasons of college baseball (NCAA Division III) for the Lewis & Clark Pioneers (2019 & 2020). When Covid-19 hit, and the NCAA canceled the rest of the 2020 baseball season, Joey knew he had to stay polished behind the camera. It was suggested to him to start a "Dodgers Postgame Show" on Youtube. During the lockdown, Joey stayed busy with producing and creating content for all 162 Dodgers games, plus the postseason in 2021.
In late 2021, Joey came out to his family as gay. He comes from a mixed race Mexican-American family. Joey realizes the weight and responsibility of representing both racial diversity and the LGBTQ+ community in the sports world. Although these designations don't define him, they are the heart of who he is. Joey hopes to bring his diverse background to your organization. Joey continued pursuing opportunities in his senior year of college. He was a reporter and play-by-play announcer for the Arizona State Softball team in 2022 (NCAA Division I). He had the chance to work with the PAC-12 Network. He witnessed the atmosphere of Division I collegiate sports.
Joey spent the winter of 2023 on the broadcast team for the California Winter League. He was responsible for Play-by-play, Color analysis and PAA depending on the day. He interviewed prospects, as well as Independent League managers and MLB scouts. He graduated with his bachelor's degree in Mass Communications & Media Studies with a minor in English in 2022. He graduated with honors, cum laude.
In the summer of 2023, Joey called his first full season of baseball for the Cowlitz Black Bears in the West Coast League. The WCL is a collegiate wooden bat league designed to develop players, coaches, umpires and broadcasters. Joey traveled with the team all over the Pacific Northwest and called 57 games in 70 days. He learned how to stay polished on long road trips and to be prepared for games every day. He was responsible for calling home games online and away games on the radio. Joe Davis, his mentor, told Joey to, “Be prepared and focus on getting better every single day.” Joey felt that he made a lot of progress throughout the season and continues to find ways to improve on-air.
In the fall of 2023 Joey was accepted to the Disney College Program at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida. Although he won’t be calling games every day, he’ll be working and learning from one of the most well-versed entertainment companies in the world. Joey looks forward to networking at the ESPN sector of the Walt Disney Company and to come away with more life and work skills through this unique opportunity. He is looking forward to the next opportunity, wherever that might take him.
